Many of his brief appearances in the series through flashbacks featured little of the gregarious Avatar and he seemed more like a determined leader. The fun-loving Aang they knew and adored had suddenly gotten more serious. However when The Legend of Korra, the sequel series to ATLA, initially aired (and in its own recent release on Netflix) some fans were puzzled. It’s also part of the reason why the show has quickly found a new life on Netflix. It’s one of the many reasons he’s so beloved and why ATLA sticks in the minds of so many fans years after its initial airing. Being an Air Nomad, Aang had a “go with the flow” type attitude and he’d tell a joke or pull a funny face instead of going straight to fighting. (The genocide took place soon after his departure.The following contains spoilers for Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.įor as heavy and epic as Avatar: The Last Airbender was, its lead character Aang often approached problems with a smile on his face. The events are marked “BG” (“before the Air Nomad Genocide”) and after, “AG.” Aang was confirmed as the Avatar in the year 0, during which time he fled and was frozen. The events of the series take place over a full calendar year, beginning with Aang’s defrosting in the year 99. (And then later, watching The Legend of Korra, when you realize some of them go on to make babies with each other … gross.) How old are these kids? Watching as an adult, however, might lead to some kissing confusion when you realize these beloved childhood heroes are actually, you know, children. (Oh how we eleventh-time viewers envy you.)
In that case: good for you.įor everyone else living frozen in an ice block for the last 15 years, you can now watch the greatest animated show of all time, which recently arrived on Netflix, for the first time. Unless, of course, you didn’t first watch Avatar until you were an adult. (Wasn’t Katara, like, a high schooler?) But the actual ages of Team Avatar-Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph-probably weren’t too far from your own. When you first caught Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender in 2005, you probably thought you were watching a group of young adults venture across the Four Nations when you’re a kid, everyone who’s not a kid just seems older.
